‘SHOCKING’ NUMBERS;...... ‘STUNNING’ RACES!

The meeting at Rockingham on the 2nd July saw extremely low numbers for the pickup trucks and we feel that it is necessary to give our view on this situation.

Nine pickup trucks attended the meeting, with the #69 pickup truck of Lee Rogers unfortunately dropping a valve in the free practice session and therefore with the team having no spare engine, the truck was loaded up and therefore unable to join the grid. Dave Longhurst #23 and David O’Regan #8 (who recently passed his oval test) were at the National Hot Rod world finals with Dave Longhurst being the official scrutineer and David O’Regan having qualified for the world final race meant that they were unable to attend Rockingham. Phil White #63 could not get his engine repaired in time (Phil’s first no-show in 11 years!) and we understand that Simon Carr #15 withdrew his booking for the event on Friday afternoon! All these reasons do lead the question being asked, “should this meeting have been cancelled/postponed?”

Anyway, on a normal weekend, there there should have been 13 trucks at the event.

Looking ahead........

Add to that Stuart Annible (who operates the JFF hire truck) who likes to race on the oval when the truck is available. Therefore, the next meeting should have 14 -on paper!

Former regular oval racing entrants Tony Mumford #7 is now back on the circuits but has said that he doesn’t want to do the ovals this year and Dave Briggs #2 is coming back soon onto the circuits but again is unlikely to venture onto the oval in 2011.

Looking to next year (as we doubt there will be another rookie test this season), there is Nick White #36 who we understand is keen to race on the oval and three new drivers who have already bought trucks (one of which has already passed his rookie test on the oval and another is keen to get his truck onto the oval!)

Realistically, and without ‘grabbing at too many straws’, there is a genuine potential to have 20 plus pickup trucks racing on the oval in 2012.

And finally, with only 8 trucks making the two races on Saturday, how did they put on two stunning races? The races were not orchestrated and there was no agreements made at the start. These guys were racing from the green flag and put on a great show! 13/14 trucks at the next event will be amazing but what if there was 20 next year?........mind blowing!!

Note: These are the views and thoughts of ROGERS RACING.
